What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is anything that causes severe pain, bleeding that will not stop, swelling, or damage that could cost you the tooth if you wait. The sooner you are seen, the more likely we can save the tooth and the less treatment you need.

Call us first. We ask a few questions, tell you what to do right now, and fit you in as soon as possible. If you are not sure whether it is urgent, read our guide: Is it a dental emergency?

Go to the hospital ER instead if you have swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, a high fever with facial swelling, or an injury to the jaw or head.

Call us right away for

  • Severe or throbbing toothache
  • A broken, cracked or chipped tooth
  • A knocked-out or loose adult tooth
  • Swelling or a gum abscess
  • A lost filling or crown

For a neutral overview, see the American Dental Association’s patient guide to dental emergencies.

Why patients choose it

What to do until you get here

Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water, floss gently, and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Do not put aspirin on the gum.

Knocked-out tooth

Hold it by the crown, rinse without scrubbing, and keep it in milk or back in the socket. Come in right away. Step-by-step guide.

Broken tooth

Save any pieces, rinse, and use a cold compress on the cheek for swelling.

Lost crown or filling

Keep the crown and avoid chewing on that side. Dental wax or temporary cement can cover it.
